Can you hear it?
Listen closely, there –
a quiet, solemn shudder
deep within the marrow of the earth.
It courses through each earthy vein and rises,
a weighty groan of sorrow.
earth’s subtle, solemn groan
when blasts of terror shook her face
as her own children
fathered fear and
turned to take each other’s lives.
earth’s sigh of longing
when she opened wide her arms
to hide away another dusty frame,
once more outrun by one more soul
to claim redemption’s prize.
but scarcely –
earth’s parched whisper
above an inferno of affliction,
an anguished quake of
the solemn shudder growing stronger
but never strong enough
to drown expectant hope –
and our own awaits.
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.Romans 8:22-23
